The 2023 Pilot has five trims: Sport, EX-L, Touring, TrailSport, and Elite. The aforementioned 3.5-liter V6 engine, which puts out 285 horsepower and 262 lb.-ft. of torque, sits under the hood of all and partners with a ten-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard on the Sport, EX-L, and Touring, but those trims are eligible for the all-wheel drive that comes standard on the TrailSport and Elite.
A properly equipped Pilot can tow up to 5,000 pounds with AWD and 3,500 pounds with front-wheel drive. According to the EPA, the estimated fuel economy for city driving is 19 mpg (18 mpg for the TrailSport), regardless of the drivetrain. For highway travel, the FWD Pilot is rated for 27 mpg; with AWD it gets 25 mpg (23 mpg for the TrailSport) on the open road.
Value-focused shoppers will appreciate that the base Pilot, the Sport, is well equipped with seating for eight and features such as heated front seats, tri-zone automatic climate control, LED exterior lighting with automatic headlights, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, a ten-way power driver’s seat, and a four-way power front passenger seat. It also gets power side mirrors, a 7-inch driver information display, rear privacy glass, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a tilt/telescopic steering column, rear-seat heat/AC ducts, and 20-inch alloy wheels.
EX-L buyers can choose between standard eight-passenger seating or a seven-person arrangement with second-row captain’s chairs. The standard equipment list is enhanced with leather upholstery, a power tailgate, a driver’s memory system, second-row climate controls, second-row sunshades, heated power side mirrors, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and 18-inch alloys. The eight-passenger Touring adds a power panoramic moonroof, a hands-free tailgate, roof rails, expanded proximity keyless entry (rear door access), LED cabin lighting, a stowable second-row fold-flat center seat, dual chrome exhaust tips, and 20-inch alloy wheels.
The TrailSport is more closely aligned with the EX-L as far as equipment, but with the added off-road capabilities that we alluded to in the intro. Those features range from an off-road-tuned suspension to steel underbody skid plates, and an extra inch of ground clearance. The TrailSport is the first Honda crossover that comes from the factory with all-terrain tires; these are mounted on unique 18-inch wheels designed to minimize damage from trail excursions. As far as luxuries and conveniences, it has a power panoramic moonroof, leatherette upholstery with orange accents, a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, roof rails, fold-flat second-row captain’s chairs, a Class III trailer hitch, front and rear recovery points, and a heated windshield wiper zone.
The Elite is the top-tier Pilot. It expands the Touring with perforated leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, heated second-row outboard seats, a heated steering wheel, a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, a head-up display, rain-sensing intermittent windshield wipers, heated power side mirrors with power-folding and auto-dimming functions, and a heated windshield wiper zone.
Honda Sensing, a collection of driver-assistive features, is standard across the Pilot lineup, adding these technologies: forward collision warning, collision mitigation braking, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, road departure mitigation, traffic jam assist, blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, a driver attention monitor, automatic high beams, and traffic sign recognition. The EX-L and higher trims also have low-speed braking control (for parking and low-speed maneuvering) and front and rear parking sensors. Both the TrailSport and Elite get the new TrailWatch camera system, which helps drivers steer around off-road obstructions.
A 7-inch touchscreen infotainment with a seven-speaker audio system come on the Sport trim. The other trims upgrade to a 9-inch touchscreen, with the EX-L and TrailSport getting nine speakers while the Touring and Elite receive a 12-speaker Bose sound system. All 2023 Pilots include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, SiriusXM satellite radio (except the Sport), multiple USB ports, and hands-free text messaging. A cabin intercom system is standard on the EX-L and higher trims. The Touring and Elite have navigation, access to HondaLink remote services, and Wi-Fi hotspot capability.
