What is Honda AWD?

2019 Honda CR-V EX-T

Honda AWD is the standard all-wheel-drive system that engages the rear wheels with mechanical means to improve traction and performance. With Honda AWD, Providence drivers will get a different driving experience when extra traction is needed. Learn about Honda AWD, how it works, and which Honda models feature AWD!

How Does Honda AWD Work?

Honda Real Time AWD™ with Intelligent Control System starts with a front-wheel-drive vehicle then adds a rear differential. When your Honda hits a rough patch on the roads in Cranston, it will sense that it’s losing traction. Then the system will engage the rear differential with a multi-plate clutch system, and the vehicle will begin operating with all-wheel drive.

When using the traditional AWD system, drivers can notice a small lag before the AWD begins working. However, Honda AWD provides a near-instant transition that you may not even notice happening. If rear wheels are required, the electric motor on your transmission will engage them.

Disengaging AWD is also instant and smooth. In return, you’re getting stronger control while reducing the energy required to drive your Honda. The Honda Real Time AWD system is more efficient than many other vehicles that use a mechanical AWD system.
